Bastet & Corwyn's Music: Jazz: Shirley Horn - You Won't Forget about Me

Bastet & Corwyn's Music: Jazz: Shirley Horn - You Won't Forget about Me

"You Won't Forget Me" precedes "Here's To Life" by two years, being recorded in 1990, and if it were not for the magic of the later CD, would be unmistakably considered a master-piece of its own.

Lorez Alexandria--My most popular post

So here it is again.

Lorez Alexandria

lorez

A solid singer who is superior at interpreting lyrics, gives a soulful feeling to each song and improvises with subtlety, Lorez Alexandria has been a popular attraction for several decades. She sang gospel music with her family at churches starting in the mid-'40s and worked in Chicago nightclubs in the 1950s. With the release of several albums for King during 1957-59, Alexandria became popular beyond her hometown and by the early '60s she was living and working in Los Angeles. Despite a long period off records (only a few private recordings during the 1965-76 period), Alexandria has survived through the many changes in musical styles and in the 1990s can be heard in excellent form. In addition to King her earlier recording sessions were for Argo and Impulse while her later albums have been for Discovery and Muse. ~ Scott Yanow

audiography: Theme: B-Sides and Rarities: "I'm a huge fan of sixties civil rights singer and composer Nina Simone. Her breathy, sexy, passionate voice seduces me like none other, making her one of my favourite vocalists ever. I am also a big fan of Brecht, namely his fantastic play Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera).

You can imagine my reaction when I found this track. It's Nina Simone singing one of my favourite songs from Die Dreigroschenoper, Jenny's wicked and completely frightening ballad 'Pirate Jenny', a song about her dream to leave her job as a cleaning lady in a hotel and become a pirate and then coming back and destroying the town she works in and killing everyone in it. Yeah. Nina Simone puts this amazingly terrifying and sexual spin on it, it's worth a listen, if just for how she says 'that'll learn ya' at 5:21. Seriously, download it.

Ella Fitzgerald

New Page 1: "Big Band Serenade Episode 6....Ella Fitzgerald
'The First Lady of Song,' Ella Fitzgerald was arguably the finest feamal jazz singer of all time. Blessed with a beautiful voice and a wide range, Fitzgerald could outswing anyone, was a brilliant scat singer, and had near-perfect elocution. There is simply no one in her class. A remote broadcast from Rossland Ballroom.

Blossom Dearie has become a favorite of mine. Something about her voice is just so appealing. It was such a nice surprise to find she had recorded for Schoolhouse Rock."

audiography: Summahtime...and the livin is easy

audiography: Summahtime...and the livin is easy: "'Summertime' by Angelique Kidjo'
Angelique's vocal work here is not to be beat. The Beninois singer eschews all original lyrics and instruments and instead opts to perform the entire song a-capella. It's interesting to note that her backing chorus follows exactly the instrumentation of the American classic, but Kidjo herself changes around the lead vocal part. This version may be a bit off-putting at first, but I suggest giving it a few listens before you judge it; it grew on me and I now find myself humming it all the time."

audiography: Summahtime...and the livin is easy

audiography: Summahtime...and the livin is easy: "'Summertime' by Susana Baca
Peruvian singer Susana Baca lends a bit of soft sweetness in her version of “Summertime.” Her accent gives an almost child-like air to the song, and her hummed refrains wrap around your ears like a cool breeze. Lazy and easy, this song meanders its way through the minutes like a long summer sunset."

audiography: Summahtime...and the livin is easy

audiography: Summahtime...and the livin is easy: "'Summertime' by Nina Simone
A long intro segues into the sexiest, most soulful rendition my ears have had the pleasure of hearing. Nina infuses the simple lyrics with heat and just a touch of malice."

audiography: Summahtime...and the livin is easy

audiography: Summahtime...and the livin is easy: "'Summertime' by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong'
Ella and Louis duetting to make this version an absolute classic—it doesn’t get much better. Slinky and cool, this'll make you long for lazy, hazy days of shucking corn, harassing cows, being assaulted by mosquitos in bogs, and sweating from each and every pore. Maybe those were just my summers. "

audiography: Summahtime...and the livin is easy

audiography: Summahtime...and the livin is easy: "'Summertime' by Sarah Vaughan'
This is the version I think of when I hum this song (which, unfortunately, is constantly). Sarah's Broadway quality vocals are top-notch here. I know this version was already posted, but in case you hadn't picked it up already, I'm making you do it now!"
